How To Get The Most Out Of Your Sauna Rental

When utilized correctly, saunas potentially offer numerous health benefits. To ensure you make the most of your next sauna rental from The Hot Box Saunas, we’ve compiled guidelines for preparation, the session itself, and post-sauna care.

Note: Certain health conditions may not be compatible with saunas. Before incorporating sauna use into your health and wellness routine, consult your doctor. Refrain from using the sauna if you don’t feel healthy.

Before Your Sauna Rental

Your body will undergo various reactions during a sauna session, including an increased pulse rate, elevated blood circulation, and the loss of about a pint of sweat. To prepare for all this, follow these steps:

1. Hydration is Critical

Due to the temperature and humidity, expect significant sweating. Drink plenty of water (at least two additional glasses than usual) a few hours beforehand to prevent dehydration. Proper hydration aids in opening your pores and encourages increased sweating and detoxification.

2. Avoid Alcohol

Refrain from consuming alcohol before entering the sauna, as it lowers blood pressure and may induce dizziness. Saunas and alcohol are a dangerous combination, and our rules prohibit drinking before or during the use of our rentals.

3. Hit The Showers

Take a warm shower just before the sauna to cleanse your body. This prevents bringing dirt into the sauna, opens pores, and relaxes your muscles. Ensure you dry completely before entering the sauna to facilitate quicker sweating.

4. Bring Towels

Have two towels handy: one for sitting, laying and drying yourself during the session and the other for drying when you’re finished.

5. Wear Minimal & Breathable Clothing

The best way to enjoy the sauna is the way you came into the world, naked. But not every person is comfortable with that. You need to talk to everyone in your sauna group about clothing expectations and reach a consensus.

If you must wear clothing, choose natural, breathable fabrics like cotton, hemp, linen, or bamboo. Bathing suits may seem like a good option, but they aren’t so breathable and might get uncomfortable.

6. Remove Jewelry

Take off all jewelry, including necklaces, rings, and earrings, as the high temperature can heat the metal quickly and cause burns.

7. No Technology Zone

Be prepared to leave electronics like cellphones, smartwatches, and fitness trackers outside, as the hot environment can damage them. Remember, the goal is relaxation, and our devices tend to make us anxious or take us out of enjoying the moment.

8. During Your Sauna

With these preparations in place, you’re ready for the sauna. Here are additional tips for an enjoyable session:

9. Sit on a Towel

Always sit on a towel, as sauna benches can become hot. Also, it gives you a little padding and comfort.

10. Drink Water

You’ll be losing lots of fluids and need to replenish them as you go.

11. Relax & Enjoy

Try to unwind and not be alarmed by the heat. Practice deep breathing and clear your mind of daily stresses.

12. Start Short

For your initial sauna experience, limit the duration to 10 minutes. Gradually increase the time as you become more accustomed, but never exceed 30 minutes.

Take breaks, stepping outside and returning. Exit immediately if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous, or experience a headache.

13. Cool Off

According to Finnish tradition, jump into a cold lake if available; otherwise, take a cold shower to lower your body temperature and enhance blood flow. Alternatively, step into cooler air gradually.

14. Return To The Sauna

You may need 10 to 40 minutes to cool down, but once you feel up for more heat, get back in and start the process again. Do this multiple times while you have your sauna rental.

After Your Sauna Session

You’ve completed your sauna session; now follow these steps for a smooth recovery:

1. Put On Comfy Clothing

Wear loose, breathable clothing to manage post-sauna sweating.

2. Hydrate, Again

Replenish lost fluids by drinking water immediately after the session. Consider an electrolyte-heavy drink.

3. Snack Attack

Consume a salty snack like pretzels or crackers with cheese to replenish lost sodium. Sharing a charcuterie plate is a fun and luxurious way to energize while reflecting on the sauna experience with your group.

4. Plan Your Next Rental

We trust these guidelines will maximize your sauna experience, and you’ll want to do it again! Call us anytime to schedule another rental.
